An animated Superman movie for a more mature audience…
I sat down to watch the 2007 DC animated “Superman/Doomsday” movie in 2019 with my 9 year old son. Turned out that this animated movie wasn’t really a kids movie.

While my son quickly lost interest in this particular superman tale, then I must admit that I found it to be a nice approach to the superhero genre. Especially since the genre is generally so über generic and painted black and white, with good vs. evil, and every storyline essentially being the same; the good guys are heavily outmatched and outnumbered, yet still prevail and triumph over the bad guys, every single time.

This also happened here, of course, but the trip from point A to point B wasn’t as generic and rosy red as it usually is in a superhero movie. It turned out that this 2007 animated movie was a darker and more mature oriented presentation. Which definitely appealed to me and my usual aversion towards the superhero genre.

While I wasn’t initially familiar with the performers by voice alone, I must admit that they had managed to get together a great ensemble of actors and actresses to perform the voices for “Superman/Doomsday”, which included the likes of Anne Heche, James Marsters, John DiMaggio and Ray Wise.

As for the art style, well it was sort of a reminiscent step back to the heyday of Superman, when it wasn’t all fancy and artsy. For better or worse, this approach in classic art style might not appeal to just everyone. It was for the most part interesting enough, although the drawn cheekbones on Superman made him look like a gaunt mutant.

The dialogue in the animated movie was good, and it really did help that they had good voice actors and actresses to perform the roles and lines.

All in all, then “Superman/Doomsday” was actually rather enjoyable and watchable, and I am rating it six out of ten stars.Read More
