Plot Summary:
Twelve-year-old Dre Parker could have been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying but the cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make him an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is a kung fu master. Different Characters and Location but Still the Same Basic Story
This film essentially begins with a single mother by the name of “Sherry Parker” (Taraji P. Henson) accepting a new job which requires her to move from Detroit to Beijing, China. Naturally, being a sole parent, this also necessitates bringing her 12-year-old son “Dre Parker” (Jaden Smith) with her. So, after a long flight, the two of them finally arrive at their destination and move in to their new apartment. Almost immediately, however, after observing a cute girl named “Meiying” (Wenwen Han) being harassed by some local kids, Dre is subsequently beaten up by them when he tries to help her out. And from that point on he becomes their main target. Needless to say, after suffering several beatings at the hands of these kids who have acquired training in martial arts, he soon develops a great dislike for his new surroundings. Fortunately for him, the apartment’s maintenance man named “Mr. Han” (Jackie Chan) begins to take an interest in Dre and decides to teach him kung fu in order to defend himself. But first, he has to get the local bullies to leave Dre alone and he does this by agreeing to the terms of the local dojo sensei “Master Li” (Rongguang Yu) that Dre will compete in a kung fu tournament against his champion in the not-too-distant future. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this is about the fifth time that this very familiar story has been told and–other than the geography and the names of the characters–there isn’t really anything new or different here. Admittedly, I liked Jackie Chan in this particular role, but other than that I wasn’t really impressed with anything else and I have rated it accordingly. Below average.Read More
