If ever there was a “nice guy” monster, this is it. Lon Chaney, Jr. plays Larry Talbot–the son of a rich land owner (played by the great Claude Rains). Well, one day Larry is going for a walk and is just minding his own business when he’s attacked by what he at first thinks is a wolf. Well, it turns out to be a werewolf and he is bitten in the process, so he is doomed to spend all the nights with full moons seeking out humans to rip to shreds. Bummer–especially since Larry is a really nice guy and you do feel very sorry for him–this is the best aspect of the story. Well, our hero is indeed a sweet guy, though pretty dumb, as it never occurs to him that he COULD be locked in a padded cell and kept there whenever there’s a full moon. Instead, he again and again roams the countryside ripping apart innocent folks until eventually he is killed by Talbot’s nice father–who only then realizes the immensity of his deed. I think he should have stopped feeling so bad about killing the young man, as Larry is back in a couple more films as apparently it’s tough to kill a werewolf EVEN IF YOU ARE USING SILVER!
