Good but with a disappointing ending.
“Under Suspicion” is unusual in that the film mostly takes place in real time (or close to it) and consists of a cop (Morgan Freeman) interviewing a suspect (Gene Hackman), a man who might have raped and murdered two girls. And so, unlike most police procedural shows that show a tiny bit of the interview, this film is mostly interview as well as some well done flashback scenes.

The acting is extremely good, which isn’t surprising with Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. The cast, however, didn’t make a lot of sense as the film was set in San Juan, Puerto Rico…and neither had any sort of a Spanish accent. Having them speaking English isn’t terrible, as many Puerto Ricans are bilingual, but no Puerto Rican accents whatsoever,…that just didn’t make sense.

Although the story is very good, the ending is poor and really is disappointing as the film had been so good up until then.

Overall, worth seeing but relatively weak outings for both actors who try their best with the material.

By the way, this is a remake of a French film, “The Grilling”, which I haven’t yet seen but want to as it stars an amazing actor, Lino Ventura.Read More
