Passable history lesson with some fascinating insights
This is biopic of the iconic Nelson Mandela played by Idris Elba. As a South African lawyer, he joins the African National Congress in the 1940s. Eventually he abandons peaceful resistance for armed insurrection. He is imprisoned and so does his wife Winnie (Naomie Harris). White rule is eventually forced to release him from prison and allow for majority rule.
Idris Elba is a great actor and I’m very happy with him as the younger Mandela. The fact is he doesn’t look like the older Mandela. He is too big and can’t portray the frail older man. As a history lesson, it’s a bullet point highlight reel. I was going to give it a lower rating until the conflict between Nelson and Winnie Mandela. I think it’s a really fascinating story that has the larger political implications as well as the personal conflict. It probably deserves to be its own movie.Read More
